9-foot crocodile shot dead in Sandakan | Daily Express Online - Sabah's Leading News Portal

The Wildlife Department shot and killed a nine-foot crocodile spotted in a mangrove area near Taman Millennium, Mile 4, here, Tuesday.
“We received four complaints regarding crocodile sightings in the mangrove area,” said Sandakan Wildlife Officer Hussien Muin. He said his team and Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong went to the location to put up warning signs on Tuesday morning.
For the sake of public safety, the team decided to shoot the crocodile at 10.38am after seeing it when they arrived at the mangrove area.
The crocodile weighs about 60kg and is estimated to be nine years old.
“This is not our first operation to catch crocodiles. Our team has previously been informed that there are two crocodiles in the area,” he said.
He said the Department is studying human-crocodile conflict in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) is checking on the quality of the fluids being released from a sewage treatment plant into a drain near Taman Penampang Phase 2.
This follows a Penampang rate-payer’s misgivings about the presence of sewage in the drain.
He said a strong ammonia-like smell could be detected from the structure.

He feared that effluent might be overflowing from the treatment plant to the neighbourhood.
The individual expressed his concerns in a letter to Hotline and sent the same correspondence to the DOE. ....

The drain runs near several neighbourhoods, a primary school and one part of Donggongon.
The District Council plans to upgrade the sewage treatment plant which services Taman Penampang Phase 2 and Taman Suria to minimise the nuisance posed by the stench coming from the facility.
A Council spokesman said the agency had received an allocation for this purpose from the Works Ministry.
“We are in the process of sorting out some of the details for the refurbishment effort,” he said.

“Once this is done, a tender will be called.”

THE Penampang District Council is weighing the possibility of improving the drainage in Taman Millennium Heights, following a complaint about the flash floods which occur when it rains heavily.
A spokesman for the agency said the administration would deliberate over the feasibility of rebuilding the housing drains and some of the roads in the neighbourhood which is located off Jalan Bundusan.
“Should we decide to proceed, then we will have to source for funds to implement this plan,” he said. ....
