Venice Biennale 2021 to Open to the Public from May 22nd to November 21st

La Biennale di Venezia has just announced in a press conference, live-streamed on April 12, that the 17th International Architecture Exhibition under the theme of “How will we live together?” curated by Hashim Sarkis, will open to the public from Saturday 22 May through Sunday 21 November 2021 at the Giardini, the Arsenale, and Forte Marghera. In addition, the preview will be held on 20 and 21 May.
Including 112 participants in competition from 46 countries, with 63 national participations in the Giardini, at the Arsenale, and in the historic city center of Venice, the international exhibition welcomes 4 countries, taking part in the Biennale for the first time, Grenada, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan Republic. With a growing delegation from Africa, Latin America, and Asia and with a comparable representation of men and women, this 17th International Architecture Exhibition is organized into 5 scales, three of which are exhibited in the Arsenale and two in the Centr ....

Still standing: How this Beirut building borrows from the city's past while bringing hope for the future

There’s something at once improbable and familiar, a little loud but also deeply human, about one of the newest additions to Beirut’s
evolving urban skyline. Stone Garden is an off-kilter 13-storey building featuring earthy striated facades, irregular elevations and glazing, planted balconies, and a mix of residential and office space with a publicly accessible art gallery and cafe.
Located midway between Beirut’s port area, the buzzing artsy district of Mar Mikhael and the glitzy but sterile downtown, Stone Garden was 10 long years in the making. Commissioned by the three children of the late Lebanese Modernist architect Pierre El Khoury, it had only recently been completed when the August 4 port explosion happened, leading to substantial external, but not structural, damage. ....

The concept was to rise as high as possible by offering different volumes on each facade. The rotation of these volumes allows the creation of non-parallel elements and opens up varied outdoor spaces depending on the floors. For every uneven floor, we proposed a metallic gold cladding that allows highlighting this volume, while creating big outdoor spaces (3.2m) through a floating volume which reinforces the atypical volumetry of the building.

 On the ground floor, the project builds a continued facade to the street, while higher up the floors some setbacks allow offering the apartments open terraces while strengthening the lightness of the structure with random openings. The rationality of floorplans, which offer a large majority of multi-orientation housing while limiting the number of elevator shafts, really helps saving construction costs and maintenance.
