An unprotected fish species at the centre of claims a legal loophole is allowing overfishing is now the subject of a rāhui until lawmakers make changes to protect it.
The rāhui (embargo) on fishing for pink maomao, also known as longfin perch, was announced by Ngāti Hei kaumātua Joe Davis Friday.
It applies to the waters of the iwi s rohe (boundaries) along the eastern Coromandel Peninsula between Whangapoua and Whangamatā.

Whangamata Police have charged a second person following a boat-rage incident at Tairua Wharf last month.
Sergeant Will Hamilton said a 52-year-old woman was charged this afternoon with common assault and is due to appear in Thames District Court on February 18.

A 58-year-old man has been arrested this morning following an incident at Tairua Wharf on 23 January.
He has been charged with assault and operating a vessel dangerously, and is due to appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
Further charges in relation to this incident are likely.
The Tairua boatie was filmed last month ramming another boat with his dinghy.

After being identified by the Herald he admitted the incident, saying he was angry because the other boat had raced past his boat at high speed.

The man has been charged with assault and operating a vessel dangerously.
He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Wednesday.
The woman was charged with common assault and is due to appear in the Thames District Court on Thursday February 18.
This arrest comes after a man was filmed ramming another vessel in a boat-rage incident on January 23.
Video of the incident on social media shows the man ramming an aluminium boat with his inflatable, which begins to deflate.
