But in the Autumn the mountain is a death trap for inexperienced climbers, he says.
“The maunga can bite, and he bites hard.”
The 58-year-old New Plymouth man has been involved in countless rescues and body recoveries from the maunga in his time and knows its many moods.
The first recorded fatality was in autumn 1891, when 23-year-old William Southward slipped on frozen ice and fell to his death. ....

Search and rescue operation launched after climber injures ankle on mountain

Taranaki police launched a search and rescue operation to assist a woman with an injured ankle off Mt Taranaki on Saturday.
Senior Sergeant Matt Prendergast and police were alerted about 9am after the 28-year-old and her partner, who were intending to climb to the summit, turned back due to high winds and extremely cold temperatures.
“So they decided to turn around quite high up on the mountain,” Prendergast said.
While descending the woman slipped in the icy conditions and injured her ankle. ....

The maunga was donned in a fresh coat of white, down to about 1400m, as the sun rose on Sunday after temperatures dropped to an unseasonably chilly level.
Rob Needs, of Taranaki Mountain Shuttles, said he dropped a group off at North Egmont about 7.45am.

Mount Taranaki gets a dump of summer snow

“I didn t even get out of the car because I thought it was going to be cold,” Needs said.
The snow had reached as low as Tahurangi Lodge at 1500 metres and was the result of the southerly weather system moving up the country, he said.

Rob Needs, of Taranaki Mountain Shuttles, said he could feel the chill while at the North Egmont Visitors Centre on Sunday morning.
Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge manager Dean Kira said he couldn’t see the snow when he arrived at 9am because of the low cloud but knew the temperature had fallen.
“It was certainly cold this morning. It still feels cold now,” Kira said about 12.30pm. ....
