Last minute shoppers in most of the country will have tranquil weather today with a notable exception. We begin with john schriffen. Reporter its the christmas trip turned travel nightmare for drivers on the east and west coast. In northern california, with more snow expected to blanket the mountains, cars are having trouble staying on the roads. Theres a lot of spinouts. The roads are pretty bad. Theres definitely going to be chain control for the nest two days at least going into christmas. Reporter with warmer temperatures in the bay area, the pounding rain is the hazard. This accident happened after one driver going foo fast skidded across five lanes crashing into the other. No one was hurt. People are still driving fast. For this Christmas Eve may have rain coming in and in fact by noontime might start out as a bit of sleet in our western and northern suburbs looking at whats been going on for the last several hours. A lot of cloudiness over our region now. A few breaks in the clouds over the mountains. You can see those little patches of green there. Those are areas of some light rain just now beginning to move into southwestern virginia, southern West Virginia into kentucky and tennessee. Its advancing off to the north and east. More moderate showers now moving into eastern tennessee and kentucky and thats going to be advancing toward the metro area but not until late this morning and perhaps during the afternoon well get some of that rain moving in. Right now its cold. Below freezing. All of virginia, all of maryland except near the waters and in West Virginia and some locations its down into upper teens to near 20 degrees. So as that moisture arrives later today, coming into that cold air it will probably cause some icing these counties in the lavender and counties that you see in the darker color under a Winter Weather advisory maybe snow there. Icing and snow if you are heading west into the mountains later this morning and into the afternoon.
