Pumping drilling mud into the well to force that oil back down into the reservoir. essentially, pushing that oil back into the hole that it erupted out of and started this disaster back in april. what we are looking at right now is a matter of hours, possibly days for them to finish this operation called the static kill where they will pump enough mud in there to essentially drown the oil out and hold it at bay and beat back the pressure that the oil has built up over the days since they put that cap on. they went into the procedure almost immediately coming out of a short period of testing. the results from the testing were textbook telling them that the well was in great shape and able to handle this procedure. giving everyone a great deal of confidence that they are going to see results from this, and see it very quickly. wolf? what is the worst case fear though, david? the worst case fear is that this procedure will not work, that they will find that there s weaknesses in the s ....

The depth of the entire casing to push it back down. we have been watching the underwater cameras and lost sight of them, because nothing was happening, but now the underwater cameras are very important, because we don t want to see anything floating around in here, and plumes of oil or mud or gas, because that means that something that will have ruptured. something in the because, wolf, they are adding more pressure to this. you just can t take mud, force it into some place down at 6900 or even more than that psi trying to push up. you have the push it higher than that to push it back down. so, the numbers and the pressure is going up in this blowout preventer, and the pressure going up all of the way down the well, and to pop something would be very, very damaging and the worst possible scenario. another thing they are doing while they are taking this mud and pumping it down, the wellbore, itself, is about 36 inches all of the way down. that is the size of the drill ....

The mud will not push this oil back, but if that happens, they have the fail safe mechanism ready to go where they are drilling that relief well about a week from now where they will intersect that bp well and then begin filling it up with cement. a huge cement stopper to end the threat once and for all, and the procedure will have the same effect in killing the well, but because of the caution they have instituteded in proceeding with killing this well, they say it is not going to be done until that relief well is finished, and they have that cement plug in place. we will keep our fingers crossed. thank you, david, very much. we will get a closer look at how the static operation is going to be carried out. we will turn to cnn s chad meyers for the explanation. chad? well, wolf, literally the mud. it is not dirt mixed with water, because heavy chemical that is pushing and kind of taking all of the weight and the pressure going up on the well and pushing it back down and literally ....

Bit, if you think of it that way. now, think of how an old antique antenna, and i guess i have one on the old car, but whatever, and it is going to be bigger and bigger and bigger, and as you pull it out, it is smaller and smaller and smaller. well, the casings are going to be smaller all of the way down and the casing is the protection from the outside of the rock here to where the oil would have gone had this been a successful well. they are going to ill if theicatith going to fill up the casing with mud, and they cannot fill the gap between where the rock was and the thin part of the casing that was down, there and that is why the secondary, and now we have two of them, the wells have to come in and fill up the bottom with cement so that the cement can go up into the gap. if you don t fill the gap with cement, then all of the sudden, this oil can come right back up at you on the outside of the casing. it can come up here and go up, and the well will not be killed, ....
