Medieval sword found by metal detectorist in Poland may have been used in 1410 Battle of Grunwald


An amateur metal detectorist has discovered a medieval sword which may have been used by a soldier during the Battle of Grunwald in 1410. 
Alexander Medvedev discovered the sword near Olsztyn, in northern Poland, alongside a metal scabbard, a belt and two knives.
Archaeologists have hailed the discovery as a once-in-a-decade find and it will now be studied and preserved at the museum of the Battle of Grunwald.

OLSZTYN, POLAND A medieval sword, metal pieces of a scabbard and a belt, and two knives that would have been worn on the belt were discovered in northern Poland by a metal detectorist who donated the artifacts to the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald, according to a
Live Science report. The sword may have been used in the battle, which was fought on July 15, 1410 between a Polish-Lithuanian army of 39,000 troops and 27,000 troops of the Knights of the Teutonic Order. The Knights’ loss led to the decline of their power in the region. Szymon Drej of the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald said that conservation and study of the sword could reveal the social status of its owner. If you’ve ever been to New York City’s Central Park, you may have seen a majestic statue of a medieval king on horseback holding two crossed swords above his head. The king is King Jagiełło, the Grand Duke of Lithuania who united Lithuania and Poland, and the swords were taken from the Teutonic Knights of the Cross who his army defeated in the historic and controversial Battle of Grunwald in 1410 in Poland. The statue was given to the U.S. by the Polish government in 1945, but a new artifact which is believed to be from that battle will remain in its home country. ....
