Workers’ Liberty held its annual conference on 29-30 April. The conference offers comrades a chance to bring motions to shape the group’s activity and policy for the coming year, and allows for reflection on the past year’s work and assessment of the political situation. We started with a discussion on rebuilding the forces of socialism in an era of widespread “anti-utopianism” where to many “socialism” looks like a call to retread old Stalinist or semi-Stalinist models. ....

Gáspár Miklós Tamás, a Hungarian Marxist philosopher, passed away on 15 January, at the age of 74. Under the Stalinist regime of Hungary, he was a dissident, libertarian socialist, who got fired from his teaching position at the University of Budapest for political reasons. He became the leader of the liberal Alliance of Free Democrats in 1989, where he represented the right-wing of the party, at the beginning of Hungary’s transition to market capitalism / capitalist democracy. ....
