"Our Past Doesn't Have to Dictate Our Futures": Life for Black Women and Girls After Incarceration


At the 2021 Essence Festival of Culture Wealth & Power stage, prison reform advocate Tonesa Welch opened her remarks with a common theme during a panel on incarceration: “our past doesn’t have to dictate our futures.”
She was joined by panelist Syrita Steib-Martin, the Executive Direction of Operation Restoration and moderator Topeka K. Sam, founder of The Ladies of Hope Ministries in a conversation on their experiences being justice-involved and their fight to help women and girls who have also gone through the system.
Syrita Steib-Martin said she became a social entrepreneur and started her organization Operation Restoration out of necessity. “When I was released from prison, I didn’t realize that after my sentence and me coming home I would have multiple barriers that no one spoke to me about prior to. So not being able to secure safe housing, not be able to get a job, not even be able to go back to college because you have to check the box on the application ....

Louisiana advocate for ex-inmates pardoned by Pres. Trump


NEW ORLEANS — Former President Donald Trump issued a late-night pardon to a New Orleans criminal justice advocate who was jailed as a teenager.
Now, the mistake that s haunted Syrita Steib for 20 years is officially a part of her past.
“I think I’m still trying to soak it all in,” Steib said Wednesday afternoon, just hours after learning she was pardoned from her criminal past.
Former New Orleans Saints player Benjamin Watson advocated for Steib’s freedom. Tuesday night, Trump pardoned Steib and 142 others, including New Orleans rapper Lil’ Wayne.
“Really, really thankful to God that he can use any vessel to bless you,” Steib said. ....

Donald Trump Pardons Syrita Steib


 
In one of his last acts as sitting President of the United States, Donald Trump pardoned Syrita Steib-Martin.
In 1999, when she was just nineteen years old, Steib-Martin was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison and 20 years in state prison. She was also ordered to pay restitution of nearly $2 Million. The charges and restitution stem from her role in auto theft that also resulted in an entire dealership being burnt to the ground in Tyler, Texas.
She was released from prison back in 2009, after being incarcerated for just under ten years.
These days, Steib-Martin is a criminal justice advocate in New Orleans. She is the co-founder and the Executive Director of Operation Restoration. According to Essence.com, Operation Restoration is a, nonprofit that supports women and girls impacted by incarceration by helping them achieve successful reentry into society by pushing education, while promoting leadership and self-advocacy. ....
