South Africa's MTN to appeal Syrian court's ruling

Feb 26 (Reuters) - South Africa’s MTN Group said on Friday it intends to appeal the Administrative Court of Damascus’ ruling to place the company’s Syrian business under judicial guardianship and is also considering other steps.
The company said a lawsuit was filed to the court by the Syrian Ministry of Telecommunications and the Syrian Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority earlier this month, seeking interim measures against MTN Syria. South Africa’s MTN Group said on Friday it intended to appeal a ruling from the Administrative Court of Damascus to place the company’s Syrian business under judicial guardianship and was also considering other steps.
The latest lawsuit is an added headache for the mobile operator, whose entry into the Middle East has been marred by allegations, which it has denied, that it used bribes to win a 15-year operating license in Iran and also that it aided militant groups in Afghanistan.
The company said a lawsuit was filed to the court by the Syrian Ministry of Telecommunications and the Syrian Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority earlier this month, seeking interim measures against MTN Syria. ....

MTN to fight Syria's decision to put its business under supervision

MTN says it plans to appeal a decision by the Syrian authorities to place its business under judicial guardianship, in the latest administrative tussle to hit the continent s largest mobile company.
The company did not state the nature of the dispute it encountered with the Syrian authorities, only stating that the decision was taken following a lawsuit by the Syrian Ministry of Telecommunications and the Syrian Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority.
The company was then placed under judicial guardianship following a court ruling on February 25.
MTN Group strongly disagrees with the allegations made before the court, as well as the court s decision, and intends to file an appeal, the company said in a statement on Friday. ....
