not because hiking the minimum wage might eliminate jobs. that is a real argument. raising the minimum wage to that level would violate established procedure. the white house wanted no part of violating procedure. as biden s chief of staff put it, we re going to honor the rules of the senate and work within the system. ooh, okay. keep that in mind when they try to eliminate the filibuster or pack the supreme court or make d.c. state. no living wage for you. that s one campaign promise joe biden appears to have forgotten. the promise he remembered wasn t made to you in the first place or the country. it was made to defense contractors in washington. joe biden promised them that once he took power, the united states would immediately bring war back to the middle east after a four year respite that really agitated people in d.c. when he did that, he said he wouldn t consult congress before he did it. he wouldn t even pretend to, quote, work within the system. he would just do it
of the fact that americans are looking for action be it on the economy or inflation, and that is why you see the president holding events like this one today where he is touting some of the progress the administration has made as the treasury department is estimating the federal deficit will fall by $1.5 trillion. now, the president is also making a play for senator joe manchin with all this talk about deficit reduction as joe manchin has repeatedly said that any economic agenda that passes through congress must reduce the deficit. take a listen to how president biden describes some of the progress that s been made and how he believes his economic agenda will ease some of those economic pressures. the bottom line is the deficit went up every year under my predecessor before the pandemic and during the pandemic, and it s gone down both years since i ve been here, period. they re the facts and why is it important? because bringing down the deficit is one way to ease inflation
would like to take this opportunity to speak directly to the american people. inflation is much too high, and we understand the hardship it is causing, and we re moving expeditiously to bring it back down. we have both the tools we need and the resolve that it will take to restore price stability on behalf of american families and businesses. also today, president biden is touting a record reduction in the federal budget deficit. he also promised to keep paying down long-term government debt. cnn chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins joining us. so inflation is a concern for this administration. why the focus on the deficit today? because really the president wants to push back on the criticism of his handling of the economy, and so he believes that today he can showcase his plan to address these concerns about inflation by talking about paying down the national debt something the president says is happening for the first time in six years. he knows that inflati
