ELIZABETHTOWN Eddie Madden’s route to town manager was not the usual script.
He’d worked as a planner in Highlands, a small community near the Georgia and South Carolina border in the southern Appalachian mountains. Then a 10-year stint with his father in real estate.
It was early 2008, about the time America was entering a financial crisis. Sylvia Campbell had just won her first term as mayor and the town’s clerk, Juanita Hester, said among the applications was one she thought worthy of giving a good look.
“He was flying, flew into the airport, we began to talk, and I knew immediately he was the man for us,” Campbell said. “We thought so much alike. I had some high expectations. I don’t think I ever took an idea to Eddie that he didn’t pick it up and run with it. He thinks outside of the box. That’s an attribute.”

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Elizabethtown Town Manager Eddie Madden will resign to accept the position of county manager for Columbus County, town officials said Wednesday.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Elizabethtown, and I cherish the relationships that I have established with the board, the staff, and the community,” Madden said. “I am also very proud of the accomplishments we have made together, and I am excited for the future of Elizabethtown.”
it s terrible. it s terrible. i don t know how to tell you. it s horrible. too many potholes. the nations roads received a d in the last report card from the american society of civil engineers. text, and california were among those nearly flunking getting ds. new york and michigan, both d minuses. get out here, fix the potholes. last february sylvia campbell said a gaping pothole almost caused her to have an accident on i-75 in detroit. three weeks ago it happened again this time on i-94. they need a pothole patrol or something. something s got to give. this is two times. two times to me. county officials say given the poor condition of the state s roads it s likely there will be a third time.
