Ghanem was a professor and dean for the College of Communication and took the role as acting provost in 2018 before assuming the interim provost role in 2019. “Throughout Salma’s time at DePaul, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to fulfilling our mission as a Catholic, Vincentian and urban university,” DePaul President A. Gabriel Esteban said in the release. “I am especially grateful for the wisdom and stability she provided during this past year, as we navigated countless challenges caused by the global pandemic. Based on the project’s findings, the college developed an action plan in September 2020 to address practices and policies throughout the college. Despite the college’s stated commitment to dismantling racism, numerous community members have condemned DePaul’s communication department for discrimination. The College of Communication’s current action plan includes short and long-term goals that will be modified as needed, according to the College of Communication website. Gabriel Esteban to commit to actionable change against racism. Professor Valerie Johnson, of DePaul’s political science department, sent a statement to Esteban Friday following the release of an open letter detailing issues faced by DePaul’s Black community. The letter, which was spearheaded by both the DePaul University Black Leadership Coalition (DPUBLC) and the Black Student Union (BSU), was sent to the president April 26.
