Greg Hunt faces mounting pressure to hit accelerator on vaccine rollout

“So, this shows once again a government that follows, doesn’t lead,” he told reporters in Sydney.
The federal government has signed contracts with logistics companies DHL and Linfox to deliver vaccines from March. Accenture will track vaccines and PwC has been contracted to administer the rollout.
In December Albanese set off the vaccine debate by arguing it made “no sense” to delay the rollout after approval was granted.
On 4 January Prof Raina MacIntyre warned in a YouTube video presentation that delaying vaccinations until March “may be costly and may lose us the opportunity for herd immunity [before] mutant strains become more dominant”. ....

The NSW government will have to overcome a series of impediments – including a lack of suppliers – before it can operate trackless trams in Sydney, an internal review of the technology by the state s transport agency has found.
The review, completed in December 2019, raises a number of issues for the technology pursued by the government as an alternative to light rail, including its impact on bridges and road pavements and the regulatory requirements they will have to meet.

Sydney Business Chamber’s Executive Director Katherine O’Regan says she is pleased the fireworks will go ahead on New Year’s Eve and hopes it will keep people motivated for a good business year in 2021.
Her comment comes after New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Monday no changes would be made to restrictions within Greater Sydney ahead of New Year’s celebrations.
Households would still only be allowed to accept up to 10 visitors – including children.
Allocated spots for frontline workers along Sydney Harbour – to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks display – were also cancelled as health authorities deemed the event too great a health risk. ....

Building a major prison in a suburb near Parramatta that has been dominated for decades by heavy industry risks undermining attempts to create jobs and spending on thousands of new homes there, council and business groups have warned the state government.
The
Herald revealed on Monday that the government had identified Camellia as the preferred site for Sydney s next major jail, as it races to house the state s burgeoning prison population.

Parramatta lord mayor Bob Dwyer said the council would be very disappointed if the prison was built at Camellia, on the banks of the Parramatta River, because it had been working for years on ways to transform a suburb that had suffered industrial contamination. ....

A 325-metre bridge over Parramatta River that the state government has promised to build to connect fast-growing suburbs near Sydney Olympic Park will take almost six years to pass through the planning process and construct, engineering reports show.
The reports and other documents – obtained by the
Herald under freedom of information laws – also show that Transport for NSW was planning last year for the second stage of the Parramatta light rail line to run through industrial land south of the river at Camellia.
