Ready for a winter scavenger hunt? This one combines the brief focus of speed dating with the patience of bird-watching.
You adopt a 6-mile square. On one morning, select and visit 12 spots within that square, typically the habitat of a given bird. Spend no more than 5 minutes at each spot and look or listen for only the specific birds on your list. There are just a handful, and they’re common enough that you don’t need to be an expert to identify them: a white- or red-breasted nuthatch, Eastern bluebird, American goldfinch or Eastern towhee.
Then report your findings. The data will feed into the national Audubon Society’s Climate Watch program, aimed at tracking how birds may be shifting their territories based on regional changes in weather and, as a result, habitat. ....

Cross-country skier Helena Russell enjoys an old ritual from back home in Sweden that has become a hallmark of COVID winter.
She finds the picnic table and crackling fire pit that normally aren’t there by the nature center at Love Creek County Park in Berrien Center — an offering in case you don’t want to hang out inside.
Then Russell, who now lives in St. Joseph, sets out snacks on the table and, before perching herself on the cold wooden bench, lays out a furry sheepskin she’s had for years. She’s also used stadium and camping mats or even newspapers inside of a plastic bag in the past — for a cushy tush during a post-ski meal. ....

• Downhill skiing: Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area in Jones fired up its snow guns Monday night and will continue making snow each night this week as long as there’s the right combination of temperatures below 28 degrees and dry enough air, says Mike Panich, who’s helping with public relations and management. Timber Ridge and Bittersweet resorts near Kalamazoo also started making snow. Opening dates are yet to be determined. When Swiss Valley does open, Panich says, there will be food service but not for indoor dining, per state restrictions; you’ll have to eat outside, like at a picnic table or in your car. Snow farmers are our essential workers.
There s no measurable snow on the ground yet, so Southwest Michigan ski resorts have resorted to making their own. Crews are manning the massive snow guns at Swiss Valley, Timber Ridge, and Bittersweet and preparing to open soon. Swiss Valley Ski Area shared some wintery photos on December 15, the same day Bittersweet posted a video of their efforts. Timber Ridge got a head start by one day.

Where s half a million people are out of power. i haven t skied in a while so this is interesting. but a patch work of electricity across the country. and it has wreaked havoc across the country. look at cancellations, 8,000-plus delays as of 4:00 p.m. eastern time and 60 or 50 or so cancellations and it has been a mess and a real ice storm in a lot of plays and snow as far down as oklahoma. as you report, a lot of folks have no power and then there were flash floods in a number of state where s it got warm over the weekend. so the only people that i think are cheered right now are the people we ve been talking to today out here at the swiss valley ski area in michigan. it has been a white fall and now again a white winter now that this has kicked off and it is ....
