The jazz bands of Stephen F. Austin State University – the Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces – will perform original works by SFA music faculty members, along with the music of Sammy Nestico, Duke Ellington, and other jazz greats, in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, in Cole Concert Hall.<br/><br/>The Swingin’ Axes will perform “Ymir’s Bones” by Dr. Ben Morris, assistant professor of composition, from Morris’ debut album, "Pocket Guides," released in June 2022 on Origin/OA2 Records. The Swingin’ Aces will perform “By My Side” by Sammy Nestico; “Caravan” by Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol; “Act Your Age” by Gordon Goodwin; and “Freddie Freeloader” by Miles Davis, among others.<br/><br/>Concert tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. Austin State University will present their fall “Swingin’ At The Brewery’ fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Fredonia Brewery in downtown Nacogdoches.<br/><br/>Favorites by Gordon Goodwin, Sammy Nestico, Mike Tamaro and other jazz greats will be performed by both bands.<br/><br/>Admission to the outdoor concert is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the SFA School of Music’s jazz program. The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will return from performances at the Wichita Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 23, to present their final concert of the academic year at 7:30 that night in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The night’s performance will also be the “Last Call” for Dr. Deb Scott as director of the Swingin’ Axes. Scott has decided to step down from leading the Axes to focus more on teaching and performing as professor of trombone at SFA.
Among the works to be performed are “Trombone Institute of Technology” by Michael Davis, “Big Al Meets the Barnyard Gals” by Dan Gailey, “Satin Doll” by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington, arranged by Sammy Nestico, and more.
