gingrich is now 15 points ahead of romney in a new gallup poll and mr. paul steinhauser joins us right now from washington. hello, paul. how does romney plan to handle what is shaping up to be a two-man race at this point? it really is shaping up. that was the national poll, don. take a look at this, state poll. iowa. two new polls in iowa. one of them, cbs/ new york times. you adjust showed the national poll. newt gingrich ahead by double digits. the frontrunner, we re less than four weeks away from the iowa caucuses. what is mitt romney doing about all this? romney was speaking to reporters yesterday on the campaign trail and said he would be more forceful in going after newt gingrich and pointing out the differences where they stand on certain things and he also said, you ll see more of me. more interviews and more time on the campaign trail. he says after about a week from now when he finishes up some fund-raising, you ll see a lot more of mitt romney. four weeks to go
and move on. jon: you have seen pretty much each of these candidates surge in the polls, sometimes to the number one spot, or at least number two, and then fall back, the latest, obviously, is newt gingrich. right. jon: does it mean that in the anybody but romney sweep stakes and there are those in the republican party who would like to see anybody but romney, does it mean that newt gingrich is going to be the guy? no, i don t think it means that at all at this point. i mean f. i m going have a surge you played the clip from governor perry, give me a second look, if i m going to encourage surge, i d rather surge in december before january voting than in september. and so newt gingrich is rising in a good time, but also, the delegate selection is very different this go round. john mccain wrapped the nomination up by early march. no one will wrap this nomination by early march this go round. that isn t going to happen because of how strung out the delegation process is. so they r

it hasn t happened yet this year. why? well, that s true. i think in 2008, we re talking about the early part of 2007, there was the feeling that there was a strong frontrunner in john mccain and a lot of the lesser known candidates had to get out early, especially in iowa, to break through. that was mitt romney at the time, spent a lot of money early, fast forward four years, mitt romney, now the national frontrunner in all the polls, he says he s going to run a different kind of campaign in 2012 and that would suggest a leaner campaign in iowa where he doesn t need to break through the way he did four years ago. jon: well, does that mean that iowa has lost some of its influence in the presidential sweep stakes? well, let s put it this you guys. you guys just plunked a debate on the calendar the week before the caucuses. i think that s a suggestion that iowa is going to be relevant. and if you look back over the four weeks in iowa, tim palenty has been here twice, news gingrich, t
