Anyone remembering the ascent of Newt Gingrich to House Speaker in 1995 surely noticed a difference between media coverage of that historic event and Nancy Pelosi taking the gavel back for the Democrats in 2007. One had all the joy of a child’s funeral. The other was New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. CNN even had a countdown clock to the Democrats regaining the majority. All that was missing was a lighted crystal donkey that would descend down a pole on the top of the Capitol dome. CNN’s Dana Bash called Pelosi’s gavel grab a "moment to savor," surely true for her supporters, but the bitterest of pills to swallow for those who worked their hearts out last year to keep Pelosi and her liberal army from retaking the House. Rep. Jeff Pyle announced on Tuesday that he will be vacating his 60th District House seat at the close of business on Tuesday.
The 56-year-old conservative Republican lawmaker, known for his Armstrong County drawl and dry humor, has been a fixture in the House of Representatives for the past 16 years. Lt. Gov. John Fetterman is making it official. Early Monday morning, he announced his candidacy for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2022.
The state’s unconventional Democratic second-in-command is the first top-tier candidate to officially enter the race to succeed two-term Republican U.S. Sen Pat Toomey, who is retiring when his term expires.
Fetterman, 51, did the prep work on Thursday by filing his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, signaling his interest in running. Now, he makes it clear he is entering what will be one of the nation’s most closely watched races. “I’m running for the U.S. Senate to fight for all of Pennsylvania,” Fetterman said on Twitter. ....
