Remember the sight of that three-household turkey thawing pitifully on the draining board? Followed a few days later by the stench of those mouldy unused sprouts? Christmas was on. Christmas was off. Food wasted, tears shed, hopes of a yuletide respite dashed.
Recall the grief and upheaval in your own house, and then spare a thought for an industry already on the brink of collapse. “It feels like hospitality has been an afterthought throughout the pandemic,” says Sebby Holmes, head chef of Farang – a Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded Thai restaurant in North London.
SILSDEN Moor’s Ken and Lynne Throup, of Woofa Bank Farm, won the hill bred lambs supreme championship with their first prize North of England Mules at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Christmas show. (Mon, Dec 14) The Throups clinched the title with a trio of 56kg wether lambs by tups bred by their daughter and son-in-law, Rachael and Ashley Caton, whose own local Otterburn Lodge flock has itself claimed multiple North of England Mule Sheep Association ewe lamb championships at Skipton’s annual September highlights. The Throups, who have been breeding prize-winning Mules at Woofa Bank for the past 44 years – with their sons Ian and Martin they also run a large commercial dairy herd - saw their festive hill lamb title winners first receive the Anthony Dean Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the best pen on the day, presented in memory of the former Craven Cattle Marts chairman from Threshfield.
WHILE the absence of the usual show classes prevented Northern Ireland’s Matthew Burleigh from picking up an unprecedented fourth consecutive title at The Northern Beltex Society’s ninth annual winter sale of pedigree in-lamb females at Skipton Auction Mart he did have the satisfaction of claiming the four leading prices. (Sat, Dec 12) Making his annual foray across the Irish Sea, this year with a quintet of shearling ewes, Mr Burleigh, who runs the Matt’s pedigree flock at Shanra, near Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh, secured top call of 1,000gns with his home-bred Matt’s Endeavour, a March-born twin by the 3.500gns Hackney Download, bred by the Tippetts family in Shifnal, Shropshire. Another 5,000gns tup from the same home was responsible for Matt’s 2019 Skipton title winner.
