Evangelical priest Svatopluk Karásek, a key figure of the Czech underground, has died at the age of 78. The former dissident, musician and Charter 77 signatory was persecuted by the Communist regime and spent part of his life in exile with his wife and children. Svatopluk Karásek was born on October 18, 1942 into the family of a government ministry official, who was briefly imprisoned after February 1948. As a young boy, he was influenced by the beat generation culture, which inspired him to search for his own path in life. He studied theology and in 1968 began his service as a pastor. However, after repeated problems with the authorities, he was stripped of the required state approval to minister. ....
Former dissident, singer and MP, Evangelical priest Svatopluk Karásek has died at the age of 78, the ctk news agency reported on Sunday, citing Karásek’s close friend Jiří Fiedor. Karásek, who was a priest of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and a prominent member of the Czech underground, was persecuted by the Communist regime and spent part of his life in exile with his wife and children. He returned in 1997 and served as member of the Chamber of Deputies and later as the government’s commissioner for human rights. ....
