Marie Tharp Lane: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution renames Maury Lane

FALMOUTH A street going through Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution s campus has been renamed to honor an oceanographic cartologist who introduced the first scientific map of the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
Marie Tharp Lane will replace Maury Lane, which had been named after oceanographer Matthew Maury, according to a March 11 press release from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). It s been recently brought to light that Maury had supported slavery and served in the Confederate Navy, the release said.
The Falmouth Planning Board approved the name change at a Jan. 26 meeting.
“She was quite a remarkable scientist,” said Planning Board member Paul Dreyer at the meeting about Tharp. “She probably deserves the credit that they’re trying to give her.”  ....
