Holed up in my small office at home on Wednesday, Jan. 6, away from my TV, I was preparing for next week’s issue, editing and formatting press releases, staying in touch with my reporters and assistant editor, and hoping my column for the week about local kindness was enjoyed by readers.
Then … I get a text from my assistant editor Susan Johns at 2:38 p.m.… “Protesters are breaching security at Capitol building.” A quick follow-up text, “They are on the terrace and scaling the building … Are you watching? … Oh no, they are inside the building.” I answered, “No. But I will.” ....

The emails are arriving slowly this Friday morn
So it gives me time to write … what? Once again, torn.

Since March, we haven’t shared an in-office laugh.
Pat Schmid has manned our office since then
I’m sure it is quiet there … few visits by women and men

After a few weeks at the table … too easy to roam
Pushing assignments by emails, texts and calls,
Formatting copy and, on occasion, getting outside these walls.

My reporters have worked hard getting news to appear.
My assistant Susan Johns has carried the load ....

Mussel relocation intrinsic to Britannia Beach project

Dredging of Ottawa’s Britannia Beach was completed in October, but before work could begin in August an extensive mussel relocation programme took place.
The project has reinstated the beach gradient to a depth of up to 2.4m, which involved removal of around 9000m3 of contaminant-free sediment from a 110mx80m section of the Ottawa River. It also, however, required the tagging and relocation of 45,000 mussels.
Mussel relocation was required under one of many environmental permits that City of Ottawa’s Susan Johns, manager, Design & Construction – Facilities had to navigate before dredging could commence. ....
