Families and some educators are planning to protest for the full reopening of San Francisco public schools, one year after school closures and days after the school board approved plans to bring younger children as well as special education and vulnerable students back to classrooms for in-person learning starting next month.
Decreasing the Distance, a group advocating for reopening classrooms, is organizing the march, which will depart from Alamo Square Park at 11 a.m. Saturday, and will conclude with a noon rally with Mayor London Breed at Civic Center Plaza.
After a contentious few weeks on the subject, San Francisco school officials plan to reopen classrooms for in-person learning next month. Preschoolers and elementary students (through 2nd grade) will return first though only about a third of SF elementary schools will initially reopen in April.
The district initially planned to reopen schools in phases starting in January, but those plans were put on hold after the district failed to reach a deal with labor unions over safety measures for staff in time.
