Curry resigns as Abingdon-Avon Superintendent

Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry has resigned from his position in Abingdon-Avon School District 276 effective in two weeks. He said he gave the school board his resignation effective the end of next week at Wednesday night's school board meeting. Dr. Curry tells WGIL that an opportunity presented itself as the Chief Operational Officer in a different school district. He says he'll be getting the interim superintendent up to speed before he starts in his new district. "I'm going to onboard the interim, who I believe [the school board] already has a person that is willing to do it," he told WGIL News on Thursday. "They just have to take action on it. So, I'll onboard that person next week and then I'll start my new position in my new district." Curry started in District 276 in July of 2017. A-Town school board rejects Governor's mask mandate | WGIL 93.7 FM & 1400 AM

Masks will be optional in the Abingdon-Avon School District. The District 276 Board of Education voted unanimously to reject Governor J.B. Pritzker's mask mandate, going against legal advice given to them and the recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry. "I made the recommendation based on legal advice from the board's attorney to follow the mandates," Curry told WGIL on Thursday. "And they respectfully declined that recommendation and chose to disregard the mandate. They just did not want to subject the children to the mandate of the Governor." Dr. Curry says that the board also took a stance that people should be treated respectfully regardless if they choose to be masked or not. "They were very, very clear on that [Wednesday night] that they're giving the folks in our district a choice and each group should respect the other persons' choice. Dist. #276 to receive $1.2 million in COVID relief money

It was announced on Monday that District 205 was receiving over six million dollars from the government for COVID expenses as part of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Act from the federal government.
But what of other area districts? Abingdon-Avon School District 276 is set to receive around $1.2 million dollars as part of the act, says Superintendent Dr. Mike Curry.
He said that those funds have strings attached to them. “Yes, it does come with strings attached to it. It has to all be COVID-related,” he told WGIL on Thursday. “They’re really pushing for summer school and salaries. We are definitely working on a plan for an extensive summer school opportunity. Things like extended days in the fall for students to maybe catch back up. HVAC systems… air conditioning, heating, airflow upgrades as well.” ....
