South Bend school official warns of 'unintended consequences' of proposed disannexation


A longstanding St. Joseph County debate over school district boundaries captured the state’s attention last week after Republican lawmakers booed and shouted down Black legislators’ concerns about discrimination in a bill that would remove students from the racially diverse South Bend Community School Corp. and send them to the smaller, less diverse John Glenn School Corp.
House Bill 1367, which advanced to the state Senate last week, would provide a new mechanism for John Glenn to seek disannexation of the South Bend Community School Corp.’s Greene Township without the South Bend district’s cooperation or approval.
If the bill passes, South Bend school officials say, their district could stand to lose millions in property tax money and have little recourse for the change. ....

Republican legislators boo colleagues during debate over bill related to South Bend schools


INDIANAPOLIS — Tensions flared at the Indiana Statehouse Thursday when several Black lawmakers were shouted down and booed by Republican lawmakers during floor debate on a South Bend Community School Corp.-related bill that some see as discriminatory.
Rep. Greg Porter, D-Indianapolis, walked off the House floor after several Republican lawmakers loudly objected to his calls of discrimination in House Bill 1367. Porter, a member of the Black caucus, said the bill would allow students in St. Joseph County’s Greene Township to leave the South Bend district, which is racially diverse, to join John Glenn School Corp., which is smaller, more rural and made up of primarily white students. ....
