The Sunrise Foundation’s (Sunrise) annual funding round
is now open to apply for grants.
Sunrise supports
charities and community organisations that have a charitable
purpose in Tairawhiti-Gisborne (the area covered by
Gisborne District Council).
As a community endowment
foundation Sunrise invests all donations and bequests in
endowment funds in perpetuity (forever), protecting and
growing the capital for future generations. We use the
income from our investments to make grants to charitable
causes in Tairawhiti -Gisborne every year, forever. All
the money raised here, stays here.

Derek and Rebecca Watson of Ritchie Civil Engineering
have established a Suicide Prevention fund at
Sunrise.
It was the loss to suicide of their friend
and work colleague, that prompted the couple to
act.
Derek says “I can still remember to this day
when I got the phone call. The father works next door to us,
and we know his brother, we’re all so
connected”.
“I will never ever forget that Sunday
afternoon when he rang me, it blew me away. It knocked me
off my feet, that’s a moment you don’t
forget.”

What started as a chance meeting by Wainui Beach School
(WBS) ex-Board of Trustees Chair Ailsa Cuthbert in Vietnam
has led to the establishment of the WBS endowment fund at
Sunrise.
Ailsa, who travels to Vietnam regularly for
work, met Hien Nguyen in a shop next to her office in Ho Chi
Minh City. Hien not only sells bags but teaches other women
how to make them, which they do mainly at home at night, as
a second income when their children are asleep.
