We’re at the point in the spring season and spring term where we can feel summer approaching. I’ve been thinking about one of my favorite songs, “Summer Soft” by Stevie Wonder. There’s something about the song’s dense texture and Stevie’s incomparable voice that reminds me both of summer’s restless heat and the nostalgia of school ending. In the song, Stevie shares with us an evocation of summer and winter and how he feels fooled and heartbroken when they end. He references this again and again in the chorus, singing “and he’ ....

$15 Minimum Wage Movement sets agenda for coming months

The “Pay Us 15” initiative, founded by junior Barrah Shamoon, continues its effort towards raising student workers’ minimum wage in Spring Term, under the leaderships of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Sunrise Appleton and Student Liberation Front (SLF).  
As of now, the initiative has set several agendas including approaching the Lawrence University Community Council (LUCC) at the end of this academic year and potentially forming a student worker union at Lawrence University in the next academic year, according to junior Terrance Freeman, the co-chair of SDS. The initiative will be consolidating more plans of action at the end of Spring Term, Freeman said.   ....

Campus protest demands mininimum wage bump

A Student Worker Demonstration “Pay Us 15!” was held by Student Liberation Front (SLF), Sunrise Appleton and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) on April 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. near the Warch Campus Center. This event called for the Lawrence administration to increase student workers’ minimum wage to $15 per hour to respond to students’ financial difficulties, including their tuition fees alongside their academic life.   
About 30 students attended the protest. Organizers of the event put out signs including “Wage Increase Now” and “Raise the Wage” to express their demands. They also distributed fliers regarding the demonstration to students who walked by and asked if they had signed the electronic petition form in support of raising students’ minimum wage.   ....

Lawrence University Students for a Democratic Society, or the LU-SDS, is a newly formed student-led organization dedicated to the support of progressive and or revolutionary change in the world. Their platform includes a call for police accountability councils, fighting for safer spaces in marginalized groups, raising the minimum wage and diversifying Lawrence University clubs, classes and activities. Founded by juniors Terrence Freeman and Earl Simons, the two-month-old group is 20 members strong and growing.    ....
