Canal cleaning in the city to avoid waterlogging during the monsoon will pick up pace after the polls, according to Kochi Corporation authorities.
After having been hauled up by the High Court for stalling pre-monsoon canal cleaning in the city citing the model code of conduct, the Corporation will soon begin cleaning the large canals.
The tender process for drain cleaning in some divisions is complete and work has begun, while an agreement is yet to be inked with contractors for large canals such as the Thevara-Perandoor and Rameswaram-Kalvathy canals. ....

M.H.M. Ashraf, the councillor representing Kochangadi, resigned from the CPI(M) party membership soon after the chairpersons of the standing committees were elected at the Kochi Corporation on Saturday.
Despite resignation from the party, he would continue to back the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the council, said Mr. Ashraf, who was a member of the Mattancherry local committee of the party. He said his resignation was a way of “registering his protest against the party which had not acknowledged his consistent support”. He had contested independently from the same division in 2010 and backed the LDF in the council when he won the seat. This time, he chose to contest as a member of the party. In the elections to the Kochi Corporation’s eight standing committees on Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors’ surprise move to vote for UDF-backed councillors in the polls to seats reserved for women gave the UDF a majority in one committee, while the LDF won majority in four others.
The LDF secured a majority in Development, Welfare, Health and Town Planning committees, while the UDF has a majority in the Works Standing Committee. Five seats remain vacant totally in three standing committees and these will be filled in another election to be held on January 18. Demand rife for phase-II development at Vyttila

Influx of more private vehicles a matter of concern, says councillor
Faced with additional influx of vehicles into the NH Bypass since Saturday, which created unprecedented snarls at Vyttila, demand is rife that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which owns the Edappally-Aroor NH Bypass, or the PWD, which built the Vyttila flyover, urgently take up the second phase development of the congested junction.
Saturday’s chaos is a symptom of what is in store, since more private vehicles are expected to converge at the junction.
Narrow slip road
The NHAI or the PWD must initiate steps to widen the narrow slip road on the eastern side (Thripunithura side) of the flyover, if need be, by acquiring land, to carve out space for vehicles from Palarivattom wanting to turn left towards the Vyttila Mobility Hub or Thripunithura and those waiting for signal to turn right towards SA Road, said Sunitha Dixon, councillor representing the Kochi Corporation’s Vyttila ....
