India is currently undergoing a second – and far more deadly – Covid-19 wave.
The country has been setting world records for infection rates over the last few days, according to health authorities, leading to a situation that has devastated the medical system. There is a current shortage of hospital beds in the ICU departments, as well as a lack of medicines and ventilators. Meanwhile, there has been a flood of posts on social media asking for help be it through donations or information.
It’s all led to the hashtag #IndiaNeedsOxygen trending on Twitter
at the weekend.

Coronavirus news India – live: Over 332,000 new cases recorded as Delhi hospitals run out of oxygen

The number of cases in India continues to rise as the country recorded over 332,000 cases and 2,263 deaths in the last 24 hours on Friday, taking its total tally to over 16 million. This is the second day in a row when cases have crossed 300,000.
Experts have said new variants of the virus, in particular a “double mutant” variant, have helped accelerate the surge.
Several countries have moved to ban flights from India or impose restrictions on travel to and from India, citing rising Covid-19 cases. The UK will begin treating India as a “red list” country from Friday, while Canada became the latest country to suspend all passenger flights from India for the next 30 days. ....

Sirens wailing, a police convoy escorting a tanker carrying oxygen reached a hospital in India’s capital just in time, to the huge relief of doctors and relatives of Covid-19 patients counting on the supply to stave off death.
India on Friday posted the world’s largest daily Covid-19 caseload for a second day, with 332,730 new cases and 2,263 deaths, as the pandemic spiralled out of control. ....
