Communication freshman Courtney Sullivan Wu waited for months to hear from the theatre department about the instructor ranking process for the major’s acting sequence. But when she received instructions for the process on May 17, Sullivan Wu said she was disappointed. Sullivan Wu and several theatre students participating in the ranking process this academic year said they were disappointed with how little information they were given about the professors. “When I think about the fact that this is going to be my education for the next few years, and understanding the weight of that, given what appears to me as a lack of care regarding it just frustrates and concerns me,” Sullivan Wu said. ....
Most interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Othello” center the perspectives of men like Iago or Othello himself, but a Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts Student Theatre & Performance Project seeks to empower the female characters. “Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief” aims to raise up the titular character by positively portraying women’s sexuality. The play, written in 1994 by Paula Vogel, will premiere digitally May 28 to 30. The team is filming and editing the play’s thirty scenes for viewers to stream for free on Broadway On Demand. Director and Communication sophomore Sydney Tennill said she is interested in using art to break down the stigma around sex. “Desdemona” features characters who engage in sex work without shying away from it. ....
Scores of students rushed to Norris University Center in the middle of the night Saturday for a chance to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. In an unexpected email sent at 9:29 p.m. Saturday night, the University notified on-campus students 169 unused Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines were available and that appointments started at midnight. The midnight vaccine clinic was held just days before Illinois opens up vaccines to all residents ages 16 and older. Students who secured a vaccine slot were intermittently moved to the third floor of Norris when their appointment time arrived. There, they filled out consent forms and were vaccinated by a team of 13 who set up the last-minute clinic, including staff from the Office of Student Affairs, Residential Services, Northwestern University Health Service and the University’s COVID Response Team. ....
