Potato prices in Brazil fall due to an increase in supply and quality problems
The price of the 50 kg bag of Agata special potato between January 11 and 15 stood at R$ 147.31 (-10.39%) in São Paulo, R$ 132.83 (-7.67%) in Rio de Janeiro, and R$ 133.67 (-11.18%) in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais).
This drop in prices is due to the intensification of the harvest in Agua Doce (Santa Catarina state), Sul de Minas, and Guarapuava (Parana).
According to wholesalers, the tubers from the mining regions have low quality, are rotting quickly, and have dark skin because of the rains and because they cannot withstand the excessive heat when they reach the market, which has also contributed to their devaluation.
