(File photo/MNDMNRF) More than 2,000 people have now evacuated from three Northwestern Ontario First Nations as forest fires menace their communities. Fires threatening Poplar Hill, Deer Lake, and Pikangikum First Nations hadn’t moved significantly closer to the communities, reported Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) on Friday. “We’ve seen some slightly less extreme fire behaviour in the north of the Red Lake District over the last couple of days, which has kept those fires reasonably stationary,” said fire information officer Chris Marchand. “They’re still growing in size, but not at a rate that’s too alarming.” ....
File Photo: MNRF Seventeen new fires were discovered in the northwest region by the early evening of July 16, with more reports yet to be investigated. There are 95 active fires in the northwest region with thirty-two considered not under control. 10 fires were called out today and the fire hazard is predominantly extreme across the region. Due to the extreme fire activity, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has issued implementation orders for the Red Lake and Kenora Districts that restricts access and use of certain roads and crown lands. Until further notice, all travel, use and access to the following areas are prohibited unless authorized by a travel permit. ....
