The state response to the sudden collapse in tax collections this year will almost certainly involve layoffs of state employees in addition to twice-a-month furloughs of thousands of state workers, Gov. David Ige said Friday.
During a wide-ranging discussion with the Civil Beat editorial board, Ige noted his administration has already resorted to borrowing $750 million to help meet payroll costs this year “for the first time in history,” and launched a state program review to cut $600 million in annual general fund operating costs.
Aloha, Mayor Caldwell
Kirk Caldwell is the only mayor who previously held the job of City Managing Director. That experience gives him a perspective of the workings of city hall, but that hasn’t meant success in getting buy-in with the majority of the city council members on his vision for our Honolulu. His experience as a state lawmaker hasn’t always made smooth sailing at the state legislature either.

On Monday, Hawaii’s four electors will cast their vote for president based on the popular vote. You may recall that in the last election in 2016 one of the four votes went to Bernie Sanders instead of Hilary Clinton. Since that time, the Democratic party has tightened up its process. It has switched from a caucus driven process to a party run primary.
