To the editor: Thanks to all who voted in the recent election. Having no idea what my chances were, I was happily surprised when Justice of the Peace Paul Obuchowski announced the results at the Masonic Temple. My fellow new select board members Bonnie North, Elijah Zimmer and I learned of our victories at 7:10 and were already at work in our first board meeting 20 minutes later.
With veteran select board members Peter Golec and Sue Hammond as chair and vice chair respectively, it feels like we have a capable, thoughtful and hard-working team in place. I’m also encouraged by my recent orientation meeting with Municipal Manager Scott Pickup, Finance Director Shannon Burbela and Town Planner Chuck Wise who are all welcoming and helpful to this new select board member as he learns the ropes. ....

Three Westfield-Mayville Rotarians Honored With Multiple Paul Harris Fellow Awards | News, Sports, Jobs

The Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville has seen three of its members earn their next levels of Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellow recognition.
The members and their levels are Tracy Bennett, who earned his second Paul Harris Fellow award; Dan Smith, who earned his third Paul Harris Fellow; and Sue Hammond, who earned her fifth Paul Parris Fellow.A Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) is a person who has been recognized as having done something significant for others.
The Rotary Foundation gives the Paul Harris Fellow honor for an initial contribution of $1,000 and for each $1,000 additional gift up to the Major Donor level of $10,000. The money is used for various global humanitarian efforts. ....

'We're here, we're open': London retailers open for business with restrictions

Local retail owners are happy to welcome customers through their shop doors once again, as the region enters red-control zone measures.
Sharon Lehman, owner of LifeStyles of London and Josh’s Shoes, says her business has been closed to foot traffic since Christmas Day during lockdown.
With the region entering the red-control-zone on Tuesday, the retail store can now operate at 50 per cent capacity.
“Okay guys were here, we’re open….get your runners on and let’s go!.I couldn’t even sleep, so very very excited, it’s almost like re-opening your business again.”
With snowy road conditions, it was a slow start to the day for business, but loyal customers quickly showed up to offer their support. ....

School Board Reviews Proposed Capital Project | News, Sports, Jobs

RIPLEY Ripley Central School Board members received a presentation on a proposed 2020-21 capital project from Tim Mertzlufft, senior project manager for Gordon Jones Associates, at their recent meeting.
The initial building project cost is $3.2 million,, however the district hopes to trim that cost to $2.9 million, “so we need to fine tune some things.” said Ripley superintendent William Caldwell.
Caldwell noted that the project is still in the preliminary stages.
“No final decisions have been made and we’re still putting all the pieces in place.” he said. “If we go forward, the BOE isn’t scheduled to approve the project until June and the public vote wouldn’t take place until September.” ....
