BELLINGHAM, Wash Bellingham’s PeaceHealth St. Joseph’s emergency room is the busiest any of the employees there have ever seen it.
That’s in part because of a sudden bay boom. This week, 18 babies were born in the hospital in just 36 hours.
“This has never happened before,” says Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sudhakar Karlapudi. “I’m hoping it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event.” ....

BELLINGHAM, Wash. Whatcom County’s COVID-19 infection and hospitalization rates remain above the state’s metrics for remaining in Phase 3 of the re-opening plan.
Health Department Director Erika Lautenbach told a Tuesday news conference that younger people are being hospitalized.
She said the median age in our region of those hospitalized for COVID-19 went from 67 years old in January to 52, a drop of 15 years.
PeaceHealth St. Joseph Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sudhakar Karlapudi says that all COVID patients they’ve admitted so far have not been vaccinated.
He said the vaccine essentially prevents people from getting the severe form of the disease, and he thinks that has been manifested in Whatcom County based on their experience with the fourth wave and the vaccination status of patients admitted with COVID. ....

Dec. 14 PeaceHealth will receive the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in Whatcom County, with 975 doses expected at its Bellingham hospital on Thursday, Dec. 17.
Medical workers at its St. Joseph hospital will be the first to receive the vaccine in the county and among the first in Washington state.
In alignment with guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state Department of Health, PeaceHealth is prioritizing the first doses of vaccines for healthcare workers who provide hands-on care to confirmed COVID-19 positive patients, as well as other higher-risk groups of caregivers providing face-to-face patient care, Dr. Sudhakar Karlapudi, chief medical officer for PeaceHealth Northwest, said to The Bellingham Herald on ....
