UBC to build new $66 million student recreation centre (RENDERINGS)

UBC unveiled the proposed concept designed by SHAPE Architecture earlier this spring, which calls for an indoor floor area of 101,000 sq ft spread over three storeys, including three non-varsity gymnasiums, an interior walking track, cardio and weightlifting areas, multipurpose rooms, universal and gender-specific change rooms, and administrative offices.

With its multiple entrances and a north-south, mid-building outdoor walkway corridor on the ground level that links to the UBC Life Building, the new recreation centre will have a high degree of circulation permeability for foot traffic. ....

London moves into orange zone, loosens COVID-19 restrictions

London will move out of the red zone into orange-level COVID-19 restrictions as of Monday.
The move will see indoor movie theatres and performing arts centres reopen and capacities for restaurants and gyms go up from 10 to 50.
It is unclear whether this will affect the operations of the Western Student Recreation Centre, though the shift to the orange zone comes less than a week after Western University resumed some in-person classes and campus services.
Indoor private gatherings will be capped at 10 people, double the current five-person limit, though outdoor gatherings will still be restricted to 25.
London currently has under 100 active cases of the coronavirus and no deaths in over two weeks. ....

Shepard 'optimistic' Western will return to normal next fall

Western’s president Alan Shepard said he is “optimistic” Western will return to on-campus activities and classes for fall 2021 — though all hinges on the government’s vaccine roll-out.
“When we all have vaccinations and can take our masks off, we’ll probably go back to being a primarily face-to-face institution, said Shepard.
Western University s return to in-person classes is largely dependent on vaccine distribution, which Shepard believes will be well-underway by late summer. Though he admits the administration will “have to decide soon” about the upcoming year and inconsistent messaging from provincial and federal authorities has made it challenging for the university to set plans in stone. ....
