Mourning 3 million deaths globally, Student Government to host COVID-19 memorial

Summer is on the horizon and final exams are nearing at the University of Miami, but for newly-elected Student Government President Landon Coles and the rest of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, the end of the spring semester calls for a moment of reflection.
Roughly a year after the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the globe and transformed every aspect of society, the DEI Council will honor the three million lives lost with an end-of-semester memorial.
The memorial is scheduled to take place on April 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Coral Gables campus Foote Green. There will be a maximum capacity of 150 people, which includes university students, faculty and staff. ....

As finals near, students enjoy day off and campus events during second Wellness Wednesday

In lieu of a spring break this semester, the University of Miami hosted its second Wellness Wednesday featuring many events throughout the day on campus.
The festivities began with ‘Canes Wellness Night on April 13. Students lined up at Lakeside Patio to receive merchandise, arts and crafts and food from Hurricane Productions, the Sandler Center and the University of Miami Police Department.

Caleb Stacey, a freshman microbiology and immunology major, was excited to receive some of the arts and crafts that were given out, especially the tie-dye tote bag. ....

In an attempt to make up for the lack of spring break and other in-person functions this semester, the University of Miami hosted the first of two Wellness Wednesdays on March 3. The university created many in-person activities for students to partake in on the day off from classes.
Beginning Tuesday evening was ‘Canes Wellness Night. At the event, students were able to visit many organizations such as the Sandler Center, University of Miami Police Department and Hurricane Productions. With maskless students packed close together on a sunny day in Miami, there appears to be no thought of COVID-19. As University of Miami and police departments fail to curtail Greek Life partying, fraternities and sororities continue operations as normal on a weekly basis.
On Feb 27., Greek Life hosted a party at 6520 SW 72nd Court in unincorporated Miami-Dade County. The party had more than 100 people and was hosted by Sigma Chi, according to one source. ....
