A courtesy crossing will be added to Broughton St as part of the Gore District Council s Streets Alive programme.
It will be the biggest change to Gore’s streets since the infamous centre parks were removed from Main St.
More than 400 planters, pocket parks and a ‘jellybean roundabout’ will transform the streets of Gore this month as the Gore District Council rolls out it’s ‘Streets Alive’ project.
Throughout March a series of initiatives designed to make Gore’s streets safer, more accessible and to promote being more active will appear throughout the town, as part of a three-month trial. The council has spent $100,000 on the project, with a further $900,000 coming from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Innovative Streets fund. ....

Street artists transform Bluff's old buildings

Artists adding a touch of kiwiana to the town included Flox, Kell Sunshine and Ikarus.
Street art was gaining in popularity and places like Dunedin had a street art trail, with some murals painted by internationally-acclaimed artists.
Bluff’s street art, however, was all created by New Zealand artists, he said.
“It’s all 100 per cent kiwi made, which is pretty cool – kiwi murals by Kiwis.’’
The biggest being painted this week was 40 metres long by eight metres wide, he said.
Deow was from Southland and had spent time preparing the walls before other artists arrived.
“Some of them are 100 years old and they’re just raw concrete. They’ve never been sealed and never been painted, so to transform them and give them a new lease of life is pretty cool. ....

Winter clothing needed for city's vulnerable - Medicine Hat NewsMedicine Hat News

Streets Alive Mission says it needs more winter clothing to help the city’s most vulnerable get through this recent cold snap and onward through the end of winter.
“We need layerable winter clothing,” says Streets Alive director of operations Cameron Kissick.
“Long Johns, warm shirts, sweaters, hoodies, water resistant winter jackets, gloves are especially important, handwarmers… We also need the realization that when you are out in this for 15 minutes and get into your vehicle or your house, and you say, ‘Wow, it was cold out there,’ that 15 minutes is a short period of time, and a lot of these people are spending hours of it out on the street.” ....

Gore's Streets Alive trials to be rolled out in March

“We are looking at trialling adjustments to a few key roads to calm traffic and improve safety for everyone.”
“On some roads we will look to make crossing the traffic safer by introducing pavement marking and planters to narrow the travelling carriageway. This will not only reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and cyclists but also lower the average traffic speeds.
“We’ll also be organising more creative interventions such as street art, a play trial area and pocket parks – spaces in urban areas where people can sit and relax, or children can enjoy an activity such as hopscotch.”
Standring said community engagement in the latter half of this year gave the team six key themes to work with. ....
