Penn State Extension offers variety of ‘Get Outside’ walks for families Today 5:00 AM Penn State Extension will offer a series of educational walks in the Get Outside initiative. (Photo by Marcus Schneck) Facebook Share Extension educators will lead the events that will focus on local streams, parks, ponds, forests and more. Each session will have a capacity of 25 people, and coronavirus pandemic safety measures will be observed. Most sessions will cost $5 per person. The eight programs will be: Walk with Watershed Stewards, in which a master watershed steward will lead the walk and discuss critters found in streams, identify local flora and fauna, and discuss ways to enhance or protect the streams.

Those lucky enough to have a stream on their property know it can become a mixed blessing. Over time, changing stream conditions may bring erosion and related problems. Fortunately, there are methods to reverse a stream’s demise and bring it back to being a natural asset once more. Two Penn State Extension specialists — Tyler Groh, an assistant research professor and watershed management specialist, and Danielle Rhea, a water resources educator in Jefferson County — conducted a webinar about stream issues during the virtual 2021 Pennsylvania Farm Show last week. They reviewed how a healthy stream can develop eroded banks, with soil from the property turning into sediment swept away downstream. More importantly, they described ways to avoid or correct these concerns.

Albemarle Stream Health Initiative Zoom meeting kickoffs

Photo: WINA CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Albemarle County is inviting residents to either of two Zoom virtual kickoffs of the Stream Health Initiative. The first meeting is Thursday night at 6, or you can catch the meeting Friday at noon. The county says both meetings will have the same content. You will view a brief introduction on the health of Albemarle County’s waterways, then you’ll learn about timelines and ways you can participate in the effort. The reasons for this initiative is the latest water quality samples taken by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality found 56% of Albemarle’s river and stream miles were “impaired”. This means they don’t meet state standards for use, whether for drinking water, swimming, or fishing.  Sixty-percent of the waterways in the Rivanna Watershed were either “fair” or “poor”, meaning they don’t meet state standards to sustain aquatic life.
