Under the new plan, vaccine makers will need to reserve only 50 per cent of their doses for the Union Government from May 1 and can offer the rest to states and the open market. All imported vaccines will be available in the open market for anyone to buy. The manufacturers would need to declare the prices for the 50 per cent stock (meant for other than Union Government sources) before May 1 to enable states, hospitals and private establishments to procure it based on transparent pricing declarations. With this, the Government has opened the major segment of the population for vaccination as Corona positive cases have crossed 2.5 lakh daily with over 1,000 casualties. The medical experts had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to open up jab for the young population considering protecting their health from the deadly pandemic. Accordingly, Union Government has relaxed rules for taking vaccination to allow the young population to take vaccination. Indiaâs National Covid-19 Vaccination Strategy has been built on a systematic and strategic end-to-end approach, proactively building capacity across R&D, Manufacturing and Administration since April 2020. India has been following a dynamic mapping model based on availability of vaccines and coverage of vulnerable priority groups to take decisions of when to open up vaccinations to other age-groups. The Government of India announced a Liberalised and Accelerated Phase 3 Strategy of Covid-19 Vaccination from 1st May. In a meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi, an important decision of allowing vaccination to everyone above the age of 18 from 1st May has been taken, said a press release issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Phase-I of the National Covid-19 Vaccination Strategy was launched on 16th January 2021, prioritizing protection for Health Care Workers (HCWs) and Front Line Workers (FLWs). As systems and processes stabilized, Phase-II was initiated from 1st March 2021, focusing on protecting our most vulnerable i.e. all people above 45 years of age, accounting for more than 80% Covid mortality in the country.
