French Row Over Mosque Isn t Simply About State Financing â It s More Than That
It is most likely a mix of Islamophobia and French secularism among other factors.

Among the anti-Muslim slogans discovered sprayed across an Islamic community centre in western France on the morning of April 11, 2021, was a reference to a mosque that hasnât even finished being built yet.
âEELV = Traitorsâ read the graffitied message, alongside others including âNo to Islamizationâ and references to the Crusades. It was spray painted on an Islamic center in Rennes, but its target was Strasbourgâs leading Green (EELV) party, members of whom voted on March 22 to subsidise the construction of the Eyyub Sultan mosque â also known as the Grand Mosque of Strasbourg â with a grant of 2.5 million euros (US$3 million), or 10% of the total costs.
