With roots dating back to the 1820s, the Fryfogel Inn that still stands was built in the 1840s and accommodated travellers passing into the Huron Tract. In Stratford, the earliest place was the Shakespeare Hotel. Built in 1832, it was located in the vicinity of Pazzo’s on Ontario Street. There is a marker that marks the spot where the hotel stood, as seen in the photo. Another early hotel in Stratford was the Lake Huron Hotel. Built in the early 1850s, it was used mainly by people using the rail line coming through the city.
