hi everyone. that, for joining me. i m jessica dean in for fredicka whitfield. a u.s. defense official saying an american warship shot down two drones in the red sea and lps responded after a ballistic missile attack. cnn s zach cohen and ivan watson are following the situation. zach, let s start with you and this attack. what more can you tell us? reporter: a u.s. defense official saying a u.s. destroyer in the rid sea had to shoot down two drones today, controlled by the houthi group out of yemen. this is an iranian-backed group, that has voiced support for gaza and for hamas in their war against israel. u.s. forces in the region, including these two carrier strike groups that this destroyer was operating as part of, have come under a steady drum beat of attacks since they were deployed in the aftermath of the october 7th attack by hamas on israel. u.s. officials maintain this is not a sign that the war has expanded more broadly. the steady drum beat of attacks we ve seen
that s the goal. that s what president biden spl personally wants. he thinks if he can get pack in the room with his good friend xi, they can solve a lot of this stuff. i don t know if that s true, but that s what president biden thinks. this would unlock a lot of coming trips, including trips by gen geina raimondo, there s a whole line of u.s. officials waiting to go to beijing. and if the blinken trip goes well or at least doesn t have any real calamities in it, you ll see a steady traem. and this is kind of a low bar for good relations, which is that we go there. it doesn t really address any of the structural problems. it doesn t really address the fact that china is getting more aggressive in taiwan, that genocide is ongoing, that unfair trade practices persist, but it stops it from getting worse, and that s a meager but somewhat achievable definition of success

in order to make sure that everybody who worked there is okay. it s our understanding that evacuation procedure is being followed with the new york police department. let me bring in joyce vance, former u.s. attorney and msnbc legal analyst, somebody who prosecuted crimes involving bombs. joyce, can you talk a little bit about where this goes from here and your understanding of the process when it comes to a situation like this one? sure, the good news here, the obvious good news is that none of these bombs have exploded. they were intercepted and no one has hurt. it s important to remember that there could still be other bombs in the mail straem or other explosive devices and it s important to be vigilant, but these unexploded bombs will lead investigators with a lot of evidence to work forward on. we have heard some reporting
