pictures of and the storm is still going strong. chad meyers is standing by with the latest on the track but we begin with laila santd ysantiag on the scene for us. reporter: on the southwest part of the island hurricane fiona made landfall. we are dealing with rains and wind gusts and flash flooding right now on the ground. but the big story in terms of impacts to the u.s. citizens on the island is there is an island wide power outage going on for an hour and they don t expect that power as this natural disaster comes in. the timing here is part of the story. remember nearly five years ago to the day i stood here as hurricane maria left the island without power for months. the video is dark because there s no power but listen to the exchange. [ speaking nonenglish ] she says when the power goes out she gets real anxious and tense and worried. she is worried what she will find at her house. reporter: the governor saying that mud slides are part of the concern and urging
damaging wind. a level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather here. plenty of time to up the risk to level 4 or 5. the reason we re going to see more severe weather is because of a developing storm maker across the west coast and this system is going to drop more than a foot and in some areas more than two feet of snowfall especially in the northern rockies. it s also going to bring down some really cool air and the clash in the temperatures that you see on the map here, the above average heat across the east coast, the below average temperature across the west coast, where they meet, that s where we get the severe weather. that s what we re dealing with for the next couple of days. thank you very much for breaking it all down for us, tyler. now i want to show you these images from that erupting volcano in the canary islands. we re showing you here on the show for the last few days. weeks. these are live picture blocks of lava as large as three story

even worse next week. a the big winter storm is expected to bring strong wind and snow to several states. i know. as far as the nearly 99 million people that are going to be traveling on the highways it could be fairly treacherous. in the short-term a lot of people traveling this weekend before christmas. we ve got some moisture that is going to filter in across the southeast. mostly into florida. but here is going to be the next storm maker. this area of low pressure moves across the great lakes and that promises to gather a little bit of strength. the computer models are still trying to sort all this out. on the backside of the area of the low pressure is where we re look aging at snow. for chicago, christmas eve, that could be a big problem as people trying to get out town. this is going to be a rainmaker primarily finish peopor people washington d.c. and later on in boston. it is a rain event there but for
petersons with a check of the forecast. we have one day with a breather but by this morning you are seeing on the current radar snow already falling around philly. we are a few hours away from new york city to start seeing some of that snow fall. eventually we will start seeing snow pretty much from the northeast really back all the way through new england and even the mid-atlantic. so that is the story today. you can see that winter threat extending pretty much along that immediate coastline there as the low is expected to form today. as far as amounts, around new york city, around boston now up to a little bit more from yesterday and looking for maybe as much as 2 to 4 inches. a pretty good system will be out there farther to the north around portland we could see as much as 6 to 9 inches of snow. pretty good storm maker is out there and we will talk about the timing a little bit. you can see this morning as we start to see it especially during the morning commute hours making its
