i m bianca nobilo. and i m max foster. we re following this breaking news. a tragic scene unfolding at a building in johannesburg, south africa where fire has claimed at least 63 lives. we re to workers are conducting recovery operations. the flames proper out around 1:30 a.m. local time presumably while many inside were asleep. a spokesperson says the five-story building were filled with hundreds of settlements and we re hearing disturbing details about what theendured. let s go straight to david mckenzie. reporter: a terrible scene here. if we look at what is happening, there are police, firefighters. the building is just over my right shoulder. and in the early hours this morning maybe around 2w12:30 or 1:00, witnesses say the fire spread rapidly. and people were jumping out to try to escape the inferno. local administrators are saying that there were many children amongst those burnt in the fire. more than 60 people now dead and forensic teams were passing b ....

our coverage continues today of storm idalia. that s the storm that s wreaking havoc across large sections of the country tonight. i am abby phillip. and right now, idalia is a tropical storm after making landfall as a hurricane. the storms rain is now covering four states, stretching 600 miles from florida all the way up to north carolina. and that wind is now impacting half of that area. now, the danger remains as idalia continues to move north into the carolinas this hour. and the record storm surge threatens communities in those areas. now, homes are still underwater. and some of the damage is catastrophic. cnn s live across the southeast, including in charleston, where there are reports tonight of flooding right in the city center. we will go right there in a moment. but i want to start first with our meteorologist chad myers. he s over in the cnn weather center. chad, what is the condition right now of this storm? and where is it headed? we are losing some win ....

ramaphosa, said it was a tragedy. our correspondent in johannesburg, pumza fihlani, sent this report. piercing screams as a fire rages through a building in the heart ofjohannesburg. home to hundreds, residents have described the horror of people clamouring to get to the nearest exit as smoke filled the building s narrow corridors. many were not that lucky. the actual fire escape was closed, so there was a lot of people, you know, a lot of people with smoke, people were suffocated, a lot of people died because of the smoke, because there was a lot of pressure, some of the gates were closed. as bodies are pulled out of the gutted building onto the street, grief sets in for some of the survivors. the reality of their loss sinking in. many of those who have died are said to be burnt beyond recognition. hours later, and the flames are finally out. this has now become a recovery operation, emergency workers have said. officials have told the bbc that it is unlikely that any ....
