Ahead of this weekend’s social media boycott, Manchester United, has revealed the scale of abuse directed at its players through the platforms.
The club said that there has been a 350% increase in abuse directed towards its players. The research showed:
86% of these posts were racist,
8% were homophobic or transphobic;
Activity peaked in January 2021 with over 400 abusive player posts recorded;
The vast majority of racist posts contained either the N word (and variants on the spelling) or emojis used with racist intent (monkey, chimp, banana, gorilla).
It also showed that there was also an increase of user-to-user abuse within the community, with a sharp rise over the summer of 2020. 43% of these posts were racist in nature, while 7% were homophobic or transphobic.
LFC launches anti-hate campaign – Stop The Hate, Stand Up, Report It
Reds’ campaign ‘Stop The Hate, Stand Up, Report It’ calls for fans to report online hate.
Club will join footballing organisations in social media boycott from 3pm BST on Friday April 30 to midnight on May 3.
To take a stand against hate, the Reds are launching a new social media campaign – Stop The Hate, Stand Up, Report It – that calls upon fans to report incidents of racism, hate and discriminatory abuse online.
The campaign aims to encourage both fans and the wider community to stand up for and support those who are on the receiving end of such abuse and take definitive action by reporting it directly to the club and relevant social media platforms.
Since it was first announced, the boycott has grown as other sport governing bodies, sponsors, partners, broadcasters and media outlets came on board.
Ceferin hopes such direct action will speak volumes in the drive for change as social media channels fall silent from 3pm on Friday until 11.59pm on Monday night.
He said: “There have been abuses both on the pitch and on social media. This is unacceptable and needs to be stopped, with the help of the public and legislative authorities and the social media giants.
“Allowing a culture of hatred to grow with impunity is dangerous, very dangerous, not only for football, but for society as a whole.
