Keeping kids safe until they can be vaccinated How summer camps are keeping kids safe this year By Sarah Winkelmann | May 3, 2021 at 7:09 AM EDT - Updated May 3 at 10:48 AM SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - As COVID restrictions begin to ease across the country, many are getting back to a more normal way of life. But when will it be safe to take the kids to normal activities again? It’s all about considering the risk factors, and that starts with the big question of who will they be around. In the state of Georgia, about 12-percent of 16 to 19-year-olds are vaccinated. In Chatham County, that number is similar, around 11-percent of 16 to 19-year-olds received the vaccine, and about 21-percent of 20 to 24-year-olds are vaccinated. ....
Now all they need is the vaccine itself. For a first round, St. Joseph s/Candler requested about 8,500 doses, enough to cover its staff of about 4,500 and about 4,000 first responders. Memorial requested about 3,000 doses to cover its staff. Neither system is sure about what it will receive. Dr. Lawton Davis, the director of the Coastal Health District, which provides public health services to eight coastal counties, expects the area to be among the first in Georgia to receive the vaccine, but is also unsure of specifics. We in the coastal area will actually be on the forefront of receiving vaccine as part of a pilot project, Davis said Friday. So we would hope to get a vaccine in the early days, though I don t know exactly how much we ll get. But it could arrive as early as Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. I just don t know. ....
