ELKTON â A year ago Cecil Countyâs unemployment rate was almost 8 percent. Now itâs hovering around 3 percent.
Steven Overbay, the countyâs director of of Office of Economic Development expects things to just get better.
âWeâre actually starting to gain some traction with national retailers,â he said, pointing to the additions of Chipotle and Five Guys as well as Ollieâs, Family Dollar and Dollar General. âNational retailers are a good economic indicator.â
Add to that the wealth of new local businesses and business expansions; which Overbay said creates even more new jobs and new business.
âI think more of this is to come,â he said. âThis is an excellent time for Cecil County. We have diversity in our business community with a growing health care market and a growing defense market plus tourism and logistics.â
PERRYVILLE â Although only in Cecil County about a year, Medline Industries needs to grow and that means the medical supply company needs more employees.
A hiring event will be held May 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the distribution center, 239 Belvidere Road in Perryville.
Medline has a 1 million square foot building that came with 250 employees who made the move from Havre de Grace according to Jesse Greenberg, spokesman. There are now 500 employees and the need for even more.
âWhen we moved here in late 2019 we had an existing workforce that came with us,â Greenberg said Wednesday.
That base of employees allowed the company to get established after the move from the 500,000 square foot building on the other side of the Susquehanna River.
