After story that has really opened up my eyes in a different way. Its an american crisis. Theres Something Like that 2. 3 million behind bars right now, 1 in every 37 people. Americas prison population began exploding in the early 70s with the war on drugs, mandatory minimum sentences, and the tough on crime policies of both parties. We have become the most Punitive Society in the world. We have the highest rate of incarceration in the world. The rate of incarceration in this country, you look at that against a chart against nato countries, you have to look at the numbers and understand, this isnt working. It affects families, the economy, and disproportionately people of color. I remember in my days as a street reporter in chicago talking to kids who would say, you know, my only choice is im either going to end up dead or im going to end up in prison. We owe it to ourselve ....
And going. and it s 70 million people who have criminal convictions in country. though you think it s really just in this space that people are impacted, it s happening everywhere. unfortunately it s still this huge stigma around incarceration. so people don t speak up. if you say it s 1 in every 3 adults, just like children that are impacted, have been impacted by the criminal legal system, you would know more than the people who raised their hands in here have had a loved one or someone they know incarcerated. a specific question to the incarcerated men joining us, how many of you are dads? wow. let me talk to this by you stand? tell me your name. steven hinds. you and i met. i asked that question about about how many were dads. tell me about your legacy of incarceration. started with my father. then i became incarcerated. and just recently my son has too become incarcerated. ....
