Historical Society Shows us some of the artifacts from the bombing. We are in the basement of the Wisconsin Historical society where we house our museum collection. We are going to look at artifacts related to the Sterling Hall bombing of 1970. Sterling hall is the Physics Department at the university of wisconsin campus. It house the Army Mathematics Research Center in 1970. The Mathematics Research center was a think tank for the army, created in 1957 to find ways to improve access to the and many enemy, in this case the vietnam war enemy, and also to provide more weapons. While the madison campus was in general,for the war in they tended to focus a lot of hate not hate but their uncomfortableness and anger at the Army Mathematics Research Center. They thought they were creating , not theo destroy enemy being soldiers, but also civilians. They felt that this was not a good way to approach more war. These were mathematicians doing math to figure out how to improve ratios. They did not
Government. So there are many different approaches. Jimmy carter, for example, wrote a wonderful book of poetry, called always a reckoning. It reflects the man. The good man that he is and the life that he has led, and his insights into the world around him and into the life of the south, for example, where he came from. And some of the contradictions of life in the south. He captures those things in poetry and he talks about his politics, too, in poetry. So yes, in all of those things, president s wrote poetry also did that. Ok. [traffic noises] together we were very small when the Movement Began. Ago, 49 yearss ago, those opposed to the war were in a distinct minority. But over the course of the next six years, we would grow into wherejority to the point the majority of the American People became opposed to the United States being involved in the war in vietnam. We are on the steps of the state capital of wisconsin in madison. This location was significant for two reasons, i think. In the first instant, it is where the first demonstration against the war in vietnam was held in february of 1965. Four years later in 1969 and of0, this was the location the massive antiwar demonstrations against the war in vietnam with tens of thousands of people, so that is why this is significant. U. S. Senate published its torture report, that prison at bagram got shut down. Now, in order to close that prison, the u. S. Had to hand over to the afghans anybody who we were Still Holding there at bagram, and it turns out one of the people we were Still Holding there was a guy who had a starring role in the torture report. So bagrams a big air base, its never been a secret that the u. S. Military operated not just a base but also a prison there, but in addition to overt facilities like that, the u. S. Also ran secret prisons in afghanistan basically from the very beginning including one that was known as the dark prison or the salt pit. In the Senate Torture report thats just come out, this facility is called cobalt. Turns out that the very first prisoner who the cia ever held and tortured at cobalt is this guy who was still in u. S. Custody as of yesterday who only got handed over to the afghans yesterday on the day that the torture report came out. This is from the torture report
